When you’re truly into signage as I am, you tend to notice the incredible creativity ordinary folks apply to public communication. Give a smart person a Sharpie or a piece of chalk, and magic happens. I’ll be sharing occasionally some of this impromptu brilliance, as I have below. I hardly think a caption is required. (One might also note how compelling humor can be. These signs not only make you laugh, they make you want to stop in see what’s going on.)
These two little bits don’t have much to do with signage, but they are both brilliant in their way. Certainly worth sharing:
From a recent blog post for the Harvard Business Review by Peter Bregman: “Motivation is in the mind; follow-through is in the practice. Motivation is conceptual; follow-through is practical. In fact, the solution to a motivation problem is the exact opposite of the solution to a follow through problem. The mind is essential to motivation. But with follow through, it’s the mind that gets in the way. “Here’s the key: if you want to follow through on something, stop thinking.”

Sports reporter Holly Anderson in a story about West Virgina’s upset victory over Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl:
“Then there was Andre Ellington’s fumble on a would-be Clemson touchdown, the ball never hitting the ground amid a squirming swamp of bodies and WVU’s Darwin Cook snatching it for a 99-yard score the other way that left no jaw in Sun Life Stadium undropped.”
“—left no jaw undropped.” Nice. Wish I had written that.
Until next time. Be well. — MP
